The North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) is a spatial refernce that was established in 1986 for the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Hawaii and Greenland were also associated with this data. It is based on the horizontal correction of conventional survey data and the inclusion of satellite transit Doppler data and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data. Global Doppler and VLBI observations were used to orient the NAD83 frame of reference relative to the 1984 BIH ground system. The orientation of the ECEF coordinate axes of the NAD83 datum is identical to the orientation of the original WGS84 datum.
